Reverse-engineering contest!

This is an Old Navy sweater that doesn't fit me, so I have to return it. But I love the stitch, which presents a great opportunity for a blog contest.

The first pic is the front, the second the back. Then come the front and back stretched.

The first person who can send me a pattern to duplicate this stitch will win a lovely package from me with some yummy knitty surprises. Please indicate if you would like fiber or yarn (or both). I must be able to follow the pattern - text or chart, I'm bicraftual - so please be precise! "Some sort of slip stitch" is not sufficient! :)

Good luck!

ETA: This is a multi-ply cotton blend. Many great tries so far, and we've spurred a great thread on Ravelry, but nobody's pegged it yet. I'll be away from the computer today but will check in tonight. Big thanks to everyone!

Not an official entry, but on a knitting machine, it's called a tuck stitch. You can create the same effect in hand-knitting by knitting into the stitch below, as one does in brioche stitches. I can see that this stitch has two rows of tucked stitches taken up in with the knitted stitch. I'll tinker with it and see if I can get actual complete directions for you, but that might put you on the right path.

It looks like brioche stitch. I believe you can find it by googleing or in most stitch dictionaries

Ok, found this nice video on youtube. You can see the stitch definition when the knitter pauses at the end and half-way point.

It's not brioche...

Clearly one of the two rows are stockinette. All the brioche patterns
I'm finding are 1 row, knit both sides. What am I missing here?

Is it a Roman Rib? I have been looking at pictures and my eyes are crossing...
It is something like this:
Row 1 (RS) knit
Row 2 purl
Row 3 *k1, p1 repeat from *
Row 4 *k1, p1 repeat from *
Row 5 knit
Row 6 purl
Row 7 *p1, k1 repeat from *
Row 8 *p1, k1 repeat from *

My guess is that it's a row of P (wrong side) followed by K1 K1below... meaning that you knit in the stitch below (this is what makes the stitch look doubled). Not sure I'm describing it well. KT

Looks to me like the knitting was done with a row or two of k, yarn in front, slip, move yarn back, k, then in the third row, the strands in front were picked up and knit. I don't know if i can explain that well in words, but it's a decorative technique I learned about in Teach Yourself Visually Knitting by Sharon Turner, although it's more of a decorative effect in front of more stitches in the book.

example of such stitch work at http://www.knittingfool.com/pages/StCatalog2.cfm?stitchid=1584&name=Cluster%20Quilting&numofst=8&stplus=1&rows=12&rplus=1&sym=0

Looks like it should be:

Row 1 & 3 (WS): p across
Row 2 (RS): k across all sts
Row 4 (RS): (k1, knit 2 below) across

whereby you knit 2 below by inserting needle into the knit stitch from two rows below the one you're working on, complete the knit wrap and lift all three stitches off needle

Rinse, repeat.

Just as a warning, I didn't road test this. But I believe it should give you the right result!!

I agree with Brittany. It is a beautiful stitch and as far as I could see, she has written it down pretty correct. You could switch row 2 and 4 ( the right side rows) if you desire. I'd give it a try this weekend.

Lol, i like the stitch but this is way above my knitting abilities to take apart and define the stitch, looks very intricate and detail oriented, smiling as i type. Good luck though!

I am pretty sure it is 'broken rib'. It's the stitch used on the "Fidget" scarf.

Brittany has got it. I'd do it differently (slipping with yarn in front) but her pattern will give you the same fabric.

Just for the pattern writing exercise I'm writing my version down too.

CO uneven number of stitches.
Row 1 purl
Row 2 *slwyif, k1* repeat **
Row 3 *slwyif, p1* repeat **
Row 4 knit

Repeat rows 1-4.

slwyif = slip with yarn in front

I think it's: Right side: K1, Sl1, Wrong side: Purl Could be?

Cast on an odd number of stitches
Row 1: Purl
Row 2: *K1, sl1, yo, repeat from * to last stitch, K1
Row 3: *P1, yo, slip yo, sl1, repeat from * to last stitch, P1
Row 4: *K1, knit next stitch together with the two yarnovers, repeat from * to last stitch, K1
Row 5: P1, *P1, yo, sl1, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, P2
ROw 6: K1, *K1, sl1, slip yo, yo, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, K2
Row 7: P1, *P1, P both yarnovers and next stitch together, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, P2
Repeat rows 2 through 7 for pattern.

OR...

Row 1: Purl
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: Purl
Row 4: *K1, Knit into stitch two rows down, repeat from * to last stitch, K1
Row 5: Purl
Row 6: Knit
Row 7: P1, *p1, purl into stitch two rows down, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, P2
Repeat rows 2 through 7 for pattern.

Both gift about the same results and match your pictures.

Nephele - Your suggestion is nearly the same as the Tsock Tsarina's on Ravelry. It's very, very close.... but something's still not right. *ARG!*

Nephele said...

Okay, I think this is closer:
Row 1: Purl
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: Purl
Row 4: *K1, Knit into stitch two rows down, repeat from * to last stitch, K1
Row 5: Purl
Row 6: K1, *k1, knit into stitch 1 row down, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, k2
Row 7: Purl
Row 8: Knit
Row 9: *P1, Purl into stitch two rows down, repeat from * to last stitch, P1
Row 10: Knit
Row 11: P1, *P1, Purl into stitch 1 row down, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, P2
Repeat rows 2 through 11 for pattern.

I tried swatching my last guess last night and it didn't quite work but I think this does:

Row 1: Purl
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: Purl
Row 4: *K1, Knit into stitch two rows down, repeat from * to last stitch, K1
Row 5: Purl
Row 6: K1, *k1, knit into stitch 1 row down, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, k2
Repeat rows 3 through 6 for pattern.

Here's the swatch I knit:

I think it might be the "Beaded Rib" stitch.

Multiple of 5 + 2
1st row (RS): P2, *k1, p1, k1, p2;
rep from * to end.
2nd row: K2, *p3, k2; rep from *
to end.

Repeat these 2 rows.
